The Next Generation Brogue

When I set out to craft the Balthazar Brogue Derby, I knew I wanted to build on the beloved design of our Bernat while making it unmistakably my own.

I’ve always appreciated how the Bernat strikes that delicate balance between traditional elegance and everyday wearability, but I wanted to push those boundaries a little further and offer something that truly stood out in its own right.

I kept the harmonious round toe which maintains a classic silhouette while adding a sense of easy sophistication that, to me, sets it apart.

Of course, I also wanted the feel of the upper to be extraordinary, which is why I selected Charles Stead’s Repello suede.

I’ve been a fan of their suede for ages—not just because it’s incredibly soft to the touch, but because it wears so gracefully, gaining personality with every step you take.

Another critical detail was adding the 360-degree storm welt in a natural tone. While I love how it enhances water resistance, I also find the slight contrast of the welt’s lighter color helps define the shape of the shoe.

It’s a practical choice, but it also plays a part in how the shoe presents itself—there’s something distinct about that layer, like a frame that showcases a work of art.

Then there’s the Vibram Gumlite Commando sole underneath. I chose it for its ideal combination of rugged grip and lightweight comfort, making the Balthazar a true go-anywhere shoe. Whether you’re navigating city streets or more uneven terrain, the Gumlite Commando sole has you covered.

Yet, if there’s one element that truly captures my passion for craft and detail, it’s the handmade espresso patina. I’ve always found a deep brown patina to be mesmerizing, especially when it shifts into a softer, creamier brown toward the edges.

This subtle gradation isn’t just aesthetically interesting; it tells a story of wear, movement, and individuality. Over time, each pair will develop its own unique character, reflecting the journeys of whoever wears it.

Ultimately, the Balthazar Brogue Derby represents my vision of honoring tradition while bravely nudging it forward. It’s an experience of craftsmanship and self-expression.

I hope that, when you slip it on, you’ll sense the care, the pride, and the small innovations that went into every stitch. In the end, it’s about creating something beautiful, functional, and undeniably personal—qualities that, to me, make all the difference. Balthazar is available now in my Group-made-to-order through Tuesday, April 29th.
