Double take
I still remember when I first created the Derby Simple—it was among my very first Goodyear-welted offerings in our ready-made collection, and it quickly became a favorite.
It has always made me proud to see how its comfort, elegant silhouette, and incredible versatility have turned it into one of our most popular designs. In fact, I’ve seen many customers begin their Norman Vilalta journey with this very shoe.
You may recall that my Derby Simple has previously showcased some striking 3D patinas, and I introduced a midnight blue version in 2023.
But this year, I wanted to turn it up a notch by unveiling something a bit bolder—something that highlights the powerful interplay of color when applied to suede.
This design features a rounded toe box, a sleek four-eyelet lacing system, and my signature asymmetric pattern, which does away with a center back seam for a clean, modern look. Of course, I’ve also made sure the insole is padded and quilted because, as I often say, looking good should never come at the expense of comfort.
For the sole, I’ve chosen a Vibram Gumlite Commando—a durable option that can take on city streets and keep you on your feet all day without complaint. After all, I fully intend for you to wear these shoes everywhere (and for a very long time).
Now, for the patina: I’ve selected a reverse handmade patina on suede in Black and Bordeaux. The subtle flashes of Bordeaux catch the light at the toe box, around the facings, and at the heel—just enough color to make a statement without overwhelming your outfit.
I’m confident the Derby Simple in this new patina will bring just the right amount of flair to your wardrobe, whether you’re dressing up for a special occasion or pairing it with your favorite jeans. Each Goodyear-welted pair is meticulously hand-finished by my team of artisans here in Barcelona, and I can’t wait for you to experience our craft firsthand.
